Relationship Between New Zealand And China - 2556 Words

The relationship between New Zealand (NZ) and China is one which has grown substantially over the 42 years diplomatic relations have been intact, something acknowledged by China themselves, with its fourth-highest ranked leader praising the stronger co-operation occurring between them (Qinglin, 2012). This analysis will focus on how in its foreign policy towards China, NZ places central focus on the pursuit of growing economic interests over building a strong defence relationship or encouraging human rights improvements. Firstly, this essay will focus on how this bilateral relationship can to an extent be seen as realist in nature over the paradigm of liberal internationalism, before detailing how the relationship is considered primarily to be in NZ’s own economic interests, with security interests notably on the periphery. Following this, how NZ takes a small state approach to foreign policy with China will be examined, in that NZ is complying with them as the larger world po wer, where issues of conflicting difference are not raised.
